Making a Real New England Lobster Roll!

Usually, lobster is a special and delicious treat, saved for special occasions. But this summer, there's an abundance of Maine lobsters, so lobster prices in New England are very low. We've been enjoying this tasty seafood a lot!

A popular dish in New England is the Lobster Roll! While the original Maine lobster roll is just lobster and melted butter in a grilled hot dog roll, most restaurants in New England make it with a lobster salad that has mayonnaise. Our recipe today is our take on the classic New England lobster roll, similar to what you get in local restaurants.

How to Make a New England Lobster Roll:

The key to a perfect New England lobster roll is to keep it simple. Lobster has a delicious and unique flavor, so you don't want to complicate the recipe with too many overwhelming flavors.

A bit of mayonnaise and lemon juice, along with finely chopped celery, parsley, and scallion, perfectly complement the fresh lobster meat. My husband Jack likes to add a touch of hot sauce (we use sriracha), which adds a nice kick to the flavors, but it's optional.

For a truly classic New England lobster roll, use split-top hot dog rolls. These rolls are baked together so that when you pull them apart, there's no outer crust on the sides. In New England, you can easily find split-top rolls, but if not, any side-cut hot dog roll will work just as well.
